Results of the CREDO Mobile Book Survey
Back in March, we ran a survey of our members to learn their favorite books and authors. We were thrilled to hear about so many great books and authors from our extremely literate members. We wanted to share these results with you. If you are interested in reading any of these books, or any other books, you can find them at our Bookshop.org affiliate here.

The favorite books of those who responded were:
- To Kill a Mockingbird – Harper Lee
- Demon Copperhead – Barbara Kingsolver
- Braiding Sweetgrass – Robin Wall Kimmerer

- A Gentleman in Moscow – Amor Towles
- Prequel – Rachel Maddow
- Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents – Isabel Wilkerson
- Lessons in Chemistry – Bonnie Garmus

Caste by Isabel Wilkerson was the book most named as a book to change your perspective. Also frequently mentioned were Braiding Sweetgrass and A People’s History of the United States (Howard Zinn). To Kill a Mockingbird, 1984 (George Orwell), Braiding Sweetgrass and the Bible were most named as books everyone should read. Fiction was the most common style of books read, although there was a very diverse selection.
The most popular authors were:
- Barbara Kingsolver
- Stephen King
- Louise Penny
- Jane Austen
- Louise Erdrich
Barbara Kingsolver was by far the most popular author, with almost two times as many mentions as Stephen King.
40% of the respondents read for over 1 hour per day. 3/4 of respondents read for at least 30 minutes per day. This is a group that loves to read.
From our earlier education survey, we learned that 40% of our members had not read a single book by an author of color in high school. Check out our Bookshop.org affiliate. This is a great place to find new books and help raise money for independent bookstores. CREDO earns a commission on every book sold. We have recommendations for books by LGBTQ+ authors, authors of color, women authors and even a list of most banned books. That said, you can find just about any book you are looking for there.
