Victory: FCC caps rates and fees on prison phone calls

Justice for prisoners' familiesFor the 2.7 million children who have one or both parents incarcerated, a phone call from mom or dad means the world. But when those calls cost $20 or more for just a few minutes, it can jeopardize the finances of families already in peril.

In a perverse system of kickbacks, prisons contract to run their phone systems with private companies that charge prisoners “commission fees” on every minute of each call. Those commissions end up as kickbacks to the prisons, creating an incentive to pick companies that charge prisoners more.

Nonprofit Spotlight: Union of Concerned Scientists

Climate change is now the most polarizing issue in America. That’s part of the reason why the U.S. has been so slow to take action against global warming. But this may change as more Americans learn who’s funding climate change denial: Big Oil. A recent report by the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) details in stunning clarity Big Oil’s massive climate disinformation campaign.

Who we’re funding in October

Thanks to CREDO members, we donated $201,672 in September. How will we donate close to $200,000 in October? That’s up to you.

Here’s who we’re funding:

International Rescue Committee responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises, including aiding the Syrian refugees fleeing a brutal civil war.

Stop the attack on voting rights in Alabama

Last week Alabama announced a plan to shut down 31 county driver’s license offices across the state, leaving 28 counties without a single location where residents can obtain a driver’s license. As John Archibald observed at the Birmingham News, “Every single county in which Blacks make up more than 75 percent of registered voters will see their driver license office closed.”

This decision is a clear attempt to suppress African-American votes. First, Alabama passed a voter ID bill in 2011, which requires a government-issued photo ID to vote. Now the state is making it virtually impossible for some people to get those IDs.

CREDO fight for the right to vote

How CREDO members voted to donate $201,672 in September

In September, over 100,000 CREDO members voted to distribute $201,672 in donations to three amazing progressive groups. We’re pleased to share the results!

$79,721 to the Shell No! Fund. The fund was set up because we have to fight President Obama’s approval of Arctic drilling. CREDO directed 100% of the Shell No! Fund to support amazing groups, actions and organizing on the ground in this key moment to stop Pres. Obama and Shell from drilling the Arctic.

“Thoughts and prayers” are not enough

Another mass shooting happened yesterday, this time at Umpqua Community College in Oregon. And just like after every mass shooting, right-wing politicians who have no intention of doing anything to make people safer in the face of gun violence were quick to offer their prayers and condolences to the families and friends of the victims.

When staunch National Rifle Association supporters tweet that their “thoughts and prayers” are with the victims’ families, it doesn’t mean much because when they vote on gun laws, they are with the NRA.

Join me below the fold to see what pro-NRA politicians are saying in response to yesterday’s shooting, and to put pressure on them to do more.

Three ways to stand with Planned Parenthood on #PinkOut Day (even from your desk!)

CREDO employees stand with Planned Parenthood
Our friends at Planned Parenthood are organizing a National #PinkOut Day today, September 29, to demonstrate just how many people across the country are willing to stand up and fight for Planned Parenthood. Will you show your support for Planned Parenthood and reproductive freedom?

Here are three quick and easy ways you can participate in #PinkOut Day today, even if it’s from your desk:

1.2 million petitions to Congress: No cuts to Planned Parenthood

On Tuesday, together with representatives from Daily Kos, MoveOn and Democracy for America, I delivered more than 1.2 million petition signatures, including more than 770,000 from CREDO activists, to Democratic Leader Harry Reid and Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

Leader Reid and Sen. Warren are fierce champions of women’s rights and strong defenders of Planned Parenthood. They made clear how grateful they are for your activism, and I made clear how grateful we are for their leadership. I also shared our commitment to doing everything we can to make sure that every Democrat in the Senate joins them in holding the line against any deals or compromises that result in cuts to Planned Parenthood, even if holding the line means risking a government shutdown.

Join me below the fold for photos from the petition delivery, some thoughts on where things stand, and what you can do to stop Republicans from defunding Planned Parenthood.
